Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, emphasized that Nigeria’s economic prosperity, political stability, and national security depend largely on how well the country educates, empowers, and engages its young population.

Speaking at the 12th Lagos Public Relations Stakeholders’ Conference (LAPRSC), Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by Kayode Oyekanmi, Director Strategy, Ministry of Information and Strategy, stressed that effective policy communication remains crucial for unlocking the potential of Nigeria’s youth demographic, which represents one of the largest globally.

Commending Stakeholders for Sustained Platforms

Furthermore, the Governor commended the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations and Addefort Limited for sustaining the annual conference platform for over a decade, describing it as a vital rallying point for stakeholders.
“For twelve years, this conference has provided the space to discuss solutions, share experiences, and design pathways to move our nation forward,” Sanwo-Olu noted.

Linking Youth Empowerment to National Transformation

Addressing the conference theme “Policy Communication: Youth, Education, and National Development,” the Governor connected youth empowerment directly to national transformation.
“When we speak of youth, education, and national development, we are really talking about creativity and innovation. Nigeria is fortunate to have one of the largest youth populations in the world, which is a great strength,” he said, warning that without proper channeling, this demographic advantage could become a liability.

Education Reforms as Practical Examples

In addition, the Lagos Governor highlighted his administration’s practical application through education reforms, pointing to the EKOEXCEL initiative transforming primary schools and investments in digital literacy for secondary students.
“What makes these policies succeed is not just their design; it is the way we involve parents, teachers, communities, and, of course, the students themselves. We have learned that when people understand the ‘why’ and the ‘how,’ they give their full support,” Sanwo-Olu explained.

Preparing for a Technology-Driven Future

Emphasizing the need for educational adaptation, the Governor noted that modern education must reflect contemporary realities driven by technology. He stressed preparing young Nigerians for future employment opportunities rather than outdated job markets, requiring collaboration between policymakers, educators, and communicators.

Advocating Inclusive Policy Communication

Consequently, Sanwo-Olu challenged traditional top-down approaches, advocating for inclusive engagement.
“Our young people are not simply waiting to be told what to do. They want to be part of the process. They want to be heard. Therefore, policy communication must also mean listening, dialogue, and creating platforms where young people can contribute ideas and shape solutions,” he stated.

Celebrating Youth Resilience and Creativity

Drawing from his administration’s experience, the Governor testified to Nigerian youth capabilities when properly supported.
“This administration has witnessed firsthand the resilience, creativity, and brilliance of our young people. Give them the right environment, the right tools, and the right mentorship, and they will surprise the world.” He emphasized that young Nigerians need “policy that is clearly communicated, practical, and sustained.”

Governance as a Partnership

Finally, the Governor positioned governance as collaborative partnership, concluding that sustainable solutions require multi-stakeholder engagement beyond government alone.
“We will continue to listen, engage, and open doors for collaboration because governance is a partnership between leaders, institutions, and the people. When that partnership is rooted in trust and open communication, there is no limit to what we can achieve,” he stated, expressing confidence that such platforms position Nigeria on the right path toward youth-driven national development.
