United Bank for Africa Group has elevated Chioma Mang to the role of Chief Executive Officer, UBA Africa 1, placing her in charge of operations across Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, and Mozambique.

With the appointment, the Group strengthens its leadership structure across a critical regional bloc that spans West, Central, East, and Southern Africa.

Extensive Experience Across African Markets

Mang brings decades of senior commercial banking experience to the role, having served as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of multiple UBA subsidiaries across the continent.

Over the years, she has led operations in Liberia, Gabon, and Uganda, where she focused on rebuilding performance, strengthening governance frameworks, and stabilising risk management structures.

Driving Performance and Institutional Resilience

Throughout her career, Mang consistently repositioned country operations for improved and sustained returns. In doing so, she also built resilient institutions and high performing teams, ensuring operational discipline while navigating complex market conditions.

As a result, several subsidiaries under her leadership received global recognition, including Best Bank awards from the Financial Times of London.

Strong Governance and Legal Foundation

In addition to her banking expertise, Mang brings a strong legal background to the role. She holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Reading and a Master’s degree in Commercial and Corporate Law from University College London.

Furthermore, she has completed several executive management programmes delivered by leading global institutions, reinforcing her strategic and regulatory depth.

Leadership Focus Going Forward

In her new position, Mang has outlined a clear leadership direction centred on sustainable growth, stronger customer confidence, people development, and long term value creation across all Africa 1 markets.

She is expected to work closely with country leadership teams, partners, and regulators as UBA deepens its footprint across the region.

Industry and Internal Endorsements

The appointment has drawn strong reactions from within and outside the Group. Ernest Chimechefulam Kalu, Chief Strategy Officer at E Brands Corporate Infrastructure, described the role as an economic command centre, noting that Mang’s record shows a consistent ability to upgrade institutions rather than merely manage them.

Similarly, Mary Mulili HSC, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of UBA Kenya, welcomed Mang on behalf of the Kenya team, describing the Africa 1 cluster as a unified family committed to strengthening trust, empowering teams, and delivering sustainable outcomes across markets.

With her appointment now in effect, Mang assumes responsibility for one of UBA’s most strategically significant regional groupings, as the bank continues to expand its continental influence.
