Ogilvy wins iconic Zippo brand global account

WPP’s Ogilvy has been selected by Zippo, creator of the windproof lighter, as its global creative, PR, and social agency partner.

The account will be led out of Ogilvy’s New York office and will draw on talent and resources from across the agency’s global network.

Senior Brand Manager, Global Marketing at Zippo, Lucas Johnson, stated that: “In Ogilvy, we found a partner that valued the heritage of our brand, listened to our needs, and best demonstrated an ability to deliver integrated creative ideas and transformative strategies that will drive value for Zippo’s brand and business as we look to the future.”

According to the agency, David Ogilvy wrote Zippo’s original tagline in the 1960’s: “Zippo. Still Works.”

Zippo was founded in 1932 in Bradford, PA, and its products are sold in more than 180 countries and regions around the world. In addition to its iconic lighter, the firm markets leather goods, eyewear and lighter accessories, hand warmers, butane candle lighters and more.

A Zippo lighter is a reusable metal lighter produced by Zippo Manufacturing Company of Bradford, Pennsylvania, United States. Thousands of different styles and designs have been made in the eight decades since their introduction, including military versions for specific regiments. Zippo lighters have been sold around the world and have been described as “a legendary and distinct symbol of America”. In 2012, the company produced the 500-millionth unit. Since the company’s inception, Zippo lighters have been almost exclusively manufactured in the United States, with the exception of an operation the company ran from 1949 until 2002 in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.
