Throwback Thursday: Nostalgic Christmas TVC

By Abimbola Mohammed

Christmas is an annual sacred Christian festival that commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, the spiritual leader and founder of Christianity. While many people celebrate Christmas to honor Jesus’s birth, it’s also celebrated as a cultural holiday across the globe.

For centuries, Christmas was celebrated not as a single day. However, it became a whole season in parts of the world, beginning with December 24, Christmas Eve. Perhaps the practice of celebrating the evening before the big day is an echo from ancient Jewish reckoning. Since then brands, companies, organisations, institutions, countries all over the world have always celebrated Christmas and also given back to the communities.

Some brands have taken Christmas celebration to another level with very creative and emotional Christmas commercials. Here are some of the nostalgic Christmas commercials in Nigeria.

Coca-Cola’s “Holidays are coming!”

The Coca-Cola brand has become synonymous with Christmas since it started using images of Santa Claus enjoying a coke in the 1930s, but it was the iconic “Holidays are coming!” advert in 1995 that has stayed in the nation’s hearts for over two decades.

It is immediately recognisable from the signature tinkling of sleigh bells and brightly lit red truck and, for many, its snowy scenes and depiction of excited families are the image of an ideal Christmas.

its lyrics:

Holiday is coming (X5),

Tis the season,

Watch out,

Look around

Something’s coming

Coming to town (Coming to your town)Dooh dooh dooh…

Always Coca Cola (Coming to your town)

Something magic

In the night

Can’t you see it

Shining bright (Shining bright)

Badadadadadadadada

Always Coca Cola

Tis the season it’s always the real thing

Holidays are coming (X5)

Always Coca Cola

Watch out

Look around

Something’s coming; will definitely ring a bell with the oldies.

First City Monument Bank (FCMB

Another forget-me-not Christmas television commercials was launched First City Monument Bank (FCMB) in 2014 and it aired on television stations, the commercial features choir members singing the Christmas carol for the bank.

The lyrics goes: Let me tell you about FCMB,  The big and better bank, A culture of excellence, simple and reliable, our hallmark bank, the hallmarks of our trade, we are…..we are FCMB, we are FCMB…..FCMB

Peak Milk Christmas TVC

Peak Milk is known for reigniting that joyful culture of Christmas by creating memorable conversations. The brand launched a television commercials in 2019 where it shares the message of love through its Peakmas campaign with a fascinating television commercial that tells an exciting Christmas story using breakfast animations and musicals.

As comical as the ad might appear, its message of love remains strong, reminding everyone to be thoughtful and intentional about giving and celebrating Christmas.

Globacom “Christmas Dream” TVC

Globacom (Glo) Christmas commercial unveiled a Christmas season’s television commercial which not only seeks to entertain viewers and felicitate with them as Yuletide beckoned, but also geared towards re-enlivening their hopes and imbuing a sense of pride and optimism in them.

Employing the legendary tap dance made popular by black Americans and complemented by the evergreen Boney M‘s classic song “Feliz Navidad” one of the songs in the “Holiday” album released in 1981, Glo felicitated with Nigerians in this season of cheer, gaiety, and jollity.

The TVC called “Christmas Dream” opens with a lonely boy, forlorn and tired removing his cap and later tap dancing alone to the instrumentals of the viral song highly sought after at Christmas. Through the instrumentality of the Glo Cafe, the boy, now in his element, bubbly with the Christmas spirit is transported into a dancing hall filled with dancers of all ages, male and female, tap dancing away with eclectic dance steps.

Some break-danced, cat-wheeled, and jigged while tapping in exquisitely choreographed movement and contortion of bodies as they belted the chorus “I want to wish you a Merry Christmas from the bottom of my heart.” The TVC then morphed to the satiated boy now chuckling after having his wishes by Glo. He receives a season’s greetings note from a shooting star in the form of a recharge card that dropped into his hand.

Feeling on top of the world while standing atop the stage, the pay-off line comes powerfully expressed in a sentence statement “May all your dreams come true this Christmas!”
