Volkswagen explores flying cars in China
The German automobile giant Volkswagen is conducting a feasibility test study in China about flying cars. This was made known by Volkswagen on Tuesday, joining slew of growing numbers of companies looking into potential technology.
In a statement, the German group said: “Beyond autonomous driving, the concept of vertical mobility could be the next step to take our mobility approach into the future, especially in the technically affine Chinese market.
“Therefore we are investigating potential concepts and partners in a feasibility study to identify the possibility to industrialize this approach.”
The European automaker’s China head Stephan Woellenstein told Volkswagen CEO Herbery Diess in an interview on LinkedIn that the company wants to develop a drone that can be licensed in a bid to participate in this future market.
The news comes as companies from start-ups to other global carmakers are racing to develop commercial “Robo-taxis”, hoping to cash in on a market Morgan Stanley says could be worth $1.5 trillion by 2040.
China is the world’s biggest autos market and also accounts for the largest part of Volkswagen’s sales.
In addition to big players such as Volkswagen, Uber, Hyundai, Daimler, and Airbus are also looking to tap the potential technology.
