Throwback Thursday: Prices of food before and now II

Food is an essential commodity that everyone needs to survive. They provide the body with its nutritional needs like protein, carbohydrates, fat, amino acids, and other nutrients. Without food, the body cannot survive, grow, or function. As a necessity, the body requires the energy provided by food to be at its optimal working condition. No wonder food is reckoned as one of the necessities of life.
We bring you the concluding part of the prices of foodstuffs before now
Pasta (Spaghetti): The price of spaghetti has now increased by over 87% year-to-date; it is now sold for ₦450 (500g) up from the ₦240 price at which it was sold a few months ago. Golden Penny pasta rose to ₦450 per pack while Auntie B which used to sell for an average of ₦200 per 500g now goes for ₦400.
Noodles: Used to be cheap food to buy, when hunger sets in, but the high cost of noodles has made it almost impossible to purchase in the market. The price of Noodles has skyrocketed as a carton that was sold for ₦3, 200 a year ago, now goes for ₦5,200.
Palm Oil: The different price of Palm oil has been ridiculously unpredictable lately. Normally, during dry seasons, for example, the price of palm oil is always on the rise but falls during rainy seasons. But this year, the price has been steadily on the rise. The price of 1 liter of Palm Oil which was between ₦500-₦550 now costs ₦850. The 10 liters and 25liters which were sold for ₦6,000 and ₦13,000 are now ₦9,000 and ₦23,000 respectively.
Vegetable Oil: The same goes for the prices of vegetable oil. 1 liter of vegetable oil that used to be sold for ₦800 now costs ₦1,500. Similarly, 5liiters that sold for between ₦2,500 and ₦3,000 depending on the market you buy from then is now selling at ₦7,500, while 10 liters of ₦10,000 is now ₦15,000, 25 litter of ₦21,000 is now ₦37,000.
Plantain: Is another food item that made the list of expensive food, a bunch of plantains that is sold for ₦2,000 to ₦2,500 now cost between ₦4,500 and ₦5,000
Semovita: Made from high-quality premium wheat, Semovita is nutritious, healthy, and aids digestion; it goes with any type of soup. But the high price of this food item has prevented some from buying it. About a year ago Golden Penny Semovita (10kg) was sold for ₦3700, Honeywell Semolina (10kg) was the same price, while Mama Gold SemolinaB(10kg) – was ₦3400. As of the time of writing this report, 5kg of Semovita is sold for ₦4,700, Golden Penny 5kg is ₦5,450 while the same size of Honeywell brand is ₦5,500.
Melon Seed (Egusi): Is protein-rich and is so important in West African cuisine. It is versatile and can be eaten as a snack, used as a flavoring agent, or pressed for its oil. This essential soup ingredient has also recorded a tremendous price increase. A milk-tin cup of it that is sold for ₦250 now was sold for ₦100 six months ago, a Derica tin (measuring tin) that used to be sold for ₦250 is now ₦550 while a half paint bucket size that was sold for ₦300t now goes for ₦1,300. The paint bucket that is now sold for ₦2,500 used to e ₦1,200 six months ago.
