MTN takes first step on code harmonization

By Oghale Mafuru

Following the latest directive by the Nigerian Telecommunications Commission, NCC to telcos to implement the use of harmonized short codes for all telecommunications services before May 17th, 2023, leading Telecommunications Company, MTN has notified subscribers about the new recharge activation and data bundle codes in line with the regulation.

The company in a statement to its customers revealed that the new recharge activation codes will be *311* and no longer code *555* while its new data bundle code is *312#, which replaces the previous *131# used to activate data bundles.

The statement read: “Dear customer, this is to inform you of a change in our recharge activation code. You can now recharge your lines using *311*recharge pin# instead of *555*recharge pin#.

“You can now buy data bundles using *312# instead of *131#. We encourage you to start using the new code for your convenience. Thank you for choosing MTN”.

Recall that in March this year, the NCC had mandated all telecom companies to harmonize the short codes for services by May 17th where the old codes cease to be operational as the old and new codes will remain used concurrently until the deadline for complete transition. This means all mobile network operators will now use the same code for the same service which include airtime recharge, data subscription, and check balance, among others.

According to the regulatory agency, the directive is intended to improve consumer experience.
