Major highlights in IMC industry 2022

In 2022, some agencies, brands, companies, media platforms and individuals witnessed growth and profit compared to 2021, the year after the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc across the world.

As the world continues to adjust to the new normal and new ways of doing things, innovative and technologically savvy businesses and individuals continue to disrupt and drive the world on the path of progress. Some product and service brands also recorded impressive growth and productivity while taking the centre stage.

Taking a look at the major events that happened in Integrated Marketing Communication space from the beginning of 2022 till date, here are the major highlights of the year.

Appointments

Nigeria’s foremost dairy company, FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria Plc., appointed Audrey Joe-Ezigbo as an independent Non-Executive Director.

World’s largest food and beverage company, Nestle Nigeria, appointed Rukevwe Toka as its Category Development Manager.

Adyen, an e-commerce company, appointed Simileoluwa Afolabi-Jombo as Product Data Analyst.

Eat ‘N’ Go Limited appointed Eid Hassan as its Chief Operating Officer, to expand the leadership team.

Chenist Communications, a leading innovative Public Relations company, appointed Segun Mcmedal as the new Executive Director, Business Development, Operations and Innovation to consolidate its leadership position in the PR sub-sector.

Awards

MARKETING EDGE AWARDS

The prestigious MARKETING EDGE Awards of Excellence became both symbolic and iconic in the history of Integrated Marketing Communications and beyond. MARKETING EDGE awards 2022 was held at the glamorous Harbour Point Event Centre, Lagos in September. The event has continued to generate talkability long after the occasion. As a remarkable watershed in the annals of the awards, being the 10th edition, the 2022 awards was conceived and planned to celebrate this milestone; hence the event was very educative, entertaining, rewarding, and inspiring.

Nigerian Marketing Awards

It was a gathering of seasoned marketing professionals, accomplished experts in the marketing field and industry leaders as the inaugural edition of the Nigerian Marketing Awards debuted. The awards, designed to encourage hard work and innovation in the industry, was held on 11 November, 2022, at the prestigious Eko Hotels & Suites, Victoria Island Lagos.

IMC Regulatory agencies

ARCON  

Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON), formerly known as Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON), apart from repositioning its name and logo, officially unveiled a new law, signed by President Mohammadu Buhari, as part of its statutory mandate to regulate the advertising industry in the country.

Among other highlights, ARCON announced the removal of unapproved political communication materials effective from 5th December 2022 as part of its mandate to avoid unethical practices capable of undermining the peace and security of the country.

ARCON charged digital content creators to desist from exposing advertising messages without the approval of the regulatory agency and comply with the statutory code of advertisement to avoid sanctions.

ARCON announced that effective from January 1st 2023, the apex regulatory body will commence implementation of a policy to ensure a minimum of 75% cumulative local content of all advertising and marketing communication in the country.

ARCON instituted a suit against Meta Platforms Incorporated (owners of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp platforms) and its agent AT3 Resources Limited at the Federal High Court, Abuja Judicial Division.

OAAN

The Outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN) held the maiden edition of its Annual Awards with 12 categories. The glamorous ceremony was held on 23 November 2022 at the Marriott Hotel, Ikeja, and Lagos.

OAAN also presented a book that chronicles the historic and legendary journey of the association, including its growth, challenges, and success stories. The compendium titled: “OOH Advertising Practice in Nigeria,” was unveiled as part of activities to mark the maiden edition of OAAN 2022 Conference, exhibition and awards, which was held at Marriott Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos.

ADVAN

The Advertisers Association of Nigeria (ADVAN) held its 2022 African Awards for Marketing Excellence amidst glitz, glamour and entertainment as a celebration of hard work, outstanding performance and ingenuity. The prestigious event recognised and rewarded outstanding achievements in the Nigerian marketing communication industry, and, by extension, on the African continent.

NIPR

The Lagos State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), a leading and most populated branch of the Institute in the country, held its seventh edition of the Lagos Public Relations Industry Gala and Award (LaPRIGA).

Product Launch

Radio Adspread

Technology development company, Space Universe, unveiled the new age of radio advertisement with the launch of RadioAdspread, an AI driven global advertisement platform that digitalizes the operation of radio advert while providing real-time report of the campaign.

Airtel Nigeria

Airtel Nigeria, leading telecommunications service provider, in partnership with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), launched the Re-imagine Education initiative in Lagos. The programme is aimed at connecting 620 schools and over 400, 000 children to digital learning platforms.

SBI Media

In a bid to maintain its position as one of the leading media planning and buying agencies in Nigeria and Africa, SBI Media made history with the launch of 142.4 metres Out-of-Home (OOH) wall drapes for Binance. The structure is strategically located at the Seymour Aviation Car Park, Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

Insight Publicis

To facilitate its entry into Nigeria, Amazon Prime Video, international on-demand subscription video and over-the-top streaming platform, appointed West Africa’s leading creative agency, Insight Publicis. This comes amidst Amazon Prime Video’s effort to spread its global presence and reach more African audiences.
