IWD 2024: Netflix presents films from Nigerian women in celebration

As part of efforts to recognize women in the creative industry, Netflix has announced a slate of female-led films and series to commemorate the 2024 International Women’s day.
In a statement posted on the company’s website, the films and series announced for this year edition include Òlòtūré: The Journey’ (series), and ‘Baby Farm’ (series) by Mo Abudu, ‘Postcards’ (series) by Hamisha Daryani Ahuja, who produced the Nollywood/Bollywood film ‘Namaste Wahala,’ ‘House of Ga’a’ (film) by Bolanle Austen-Peters and Joseph Umoibom, and ‘To Kill a Monkey’ (series) by Kemi Adetiba.
According to the statement, the decision to present the films was made known at an event titled: ‘Her Story, Your Voice’, recently held in Lagos to celebrate the IWD, a holiday celebrated annually on March 8 as a focal point in the women’s rights movement.
The occasion, which was organized in collaboration with Mo Abudul of Ebony Life TV and top personalities in the creative sector, was facilitated with the aim of recognizing female filmmakers who have contributed immensely to the industry by sharing stories that resonate deeply with audiences.
Giving an insight into the rationale behind the decision to celebrate women filmmakers in Nigeria and Africa, Dorothy Ghettuba, Netflix’s Director of Content in Sub-Saharan Africa, stated that the event is a celebration of the unique perspectives and remarkable stories of African women in the creative industry, featuring insightful discussions from prominent figures.
“Female creators have been instrumental in shaping the creative landscape, and Netflix is proud to highlight their extraordinary impact both onscreen and behind the scenes, propelling the industry to new global heights.
“At Netflix, we are passionate not only about the stories we tell but also about the storytellers and the audiences we serve. We are delighted to collaborate with the female powerhouses in the creative industry to bring their stories to life and celebrate our culture.” Dorothy said.
