Ayra Starr’s song, ‘Rush’, considered for Grammy Awards

Nigerian Afropop singer and songwriter, Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, popularly known as Ayra Starr, said the Recording Academy of United States of America Grammy Award has considered one of her songs ‘Rush’ for this year’s Grammy. She announced this on her social media pages.
It would be recalled that Rush was one of the hit songs in her debut album called 19&Dangerous (Deluxe). The same song was certified Diamond winner in France by the national syndicate of phonographic publishing (SNEP) after it surpassed 5000,000 units in sales.
The post read: “I am excited and honored that my songs “Rush” off my debut album 19&Dangerous deluxe is being considered for this year’s GRAMMY AWARDS.
“Super grateful to the creatives we worked on this together, big thanks to the entire Marvin team who all made very significant contributions. To my family, friends and Mobstarrs you all rock.”
The single reached the summit of TurnTable Top 100, which is Nigeria’s only aggregate chart. It also garnered over 24 million streams on Spotify that makes it one of the most streamed Afrobeat songs on the platform, and has accumulated 23 million views on YouTube.
Ayra Starr came to limelight in December 2019 when she posted her song on Instagram that got the attention of Don Jazzy, who signed her to his record label Mavin Records.
In early 2021, Starr achieved mainstream recognition with her eponymous debut extended play and its hit track “Away”, which spent two consecutive weeks at number four on Nigeria’s TurnTable Top 50 chart; the song also peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Top Triller Global chart, paving the way for the release of her first full-length mixtape, 19 & Dangerous (2021).
Categorized mainly as Afropop and R&B, the mixtape received favorable critical reception and spawned two top forty hits in Nigeria. The lead single “Bloody Samaritan” peaked atop the Top 50 chart, becoming the first solo song by a female artist to reach the number-one position. Starr debuted on PandoraPredictions chart, and on 28 August 2021, was ranked number three on Billboard’s Next Big Sound.
Starr later achieved mainstream international recognition in 2022, with the release of her song “Rush”. The song charted in several territories, including Switzerland, Ireland and the United Kingdom, where it peaked at number 24.
With the song, Starr became the Youngest African Female Artist to surpass 100 Million views on a single video on YouTube, and also the first to do so within 5 months. She also set a new record by becoming the only Nigerian female artist to have charted a solo song on the UK Singles Chart.
