Winner emerges in FirstBank sponsored National Company of the Year competition

Taidob College, Abeokuta, emerged winners in the National Company of the Year (NCOY) competition organised by Junior Achievement Nigeria and sponsored by First Bank Nigeria Limited.

The Abeokuta-based school bagged four awards at the 2019 African Company of the Year competition in Ghana following the invention of a Gas Leakage Detector. The competition was keenly contested by 10 other Junior Achievement member countries in Africa.

The awards won by Taidob College include Client Focus Award, Entrepreneurial Spirit Award, Facilitator of the Year Award and Company of the Year Award (2nd runner up).

Commenting on their performance, Folake Ani-Mumuney, Group Head, Marketing & Corporate Communications at FirstBank, said: “The youngsters from Taidob College have indeed made Nigeria and Nigerians proud. Winning four various awards is recognition of the viability of the innovative solutions designed to save lives.

“The impact of their innovation – the Gas Leakage Detector – would go a very long way at solving the problem of fire outbreaks due to gas leakages in homes, offices, and industries. We congratulate Junior Achievement Nigeria on the strides achieved in Ghana.”

Among the past winners of the competition include Inventive Explorers, from Caro Favored College Ajegunle, Lagos Nigeria. The school, in 2018, won the Africa Company of the Year competition in Ghana. The pupils of the college showcased a rechargeable handheld LED traffic light, which has solved problems of blackout in various congested communities and reduced traffic accidents, especially in areas where school pupils cross busy roads.

FirstBank has been a major sponsor of the program, as it partners with Junior Achievement Nigeria (JAN). The National Company of the Year Competition (NCOY) is an annual flagship event by JAN, which convenes the winners of the JA Company Program Regional Competitions across Nigeria together to compete for the National Company of the Year Award.

As it stands, Taidob College, which emerged the national winner, will proceed to represent Nigeria against other JA Africa member-nation companies.
