Channels TV boss bows out as BON President
Contrary to industry rumour making the rounds, it has been authoritatively confirmed that Mr. John Momoh, founder and Group Chairman of Channels Television has bowed out as President of Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria, BON, after completing his mandatory two years first term tenure in office.
The veteran broadcaster and an entrepreneurial savvy professional who took over the mantle of leadership of the broadcast stations umbrella body January 2016 was said to have effectively completed his two-year term tenure 31st December, 2018.
However, there have been unpleasant industry rumour that the Channels TV boss may have been forced to resign his top BON position over some alleged irreconcilable differences with the organisers of Nigeria Elections Debate Group (NEDG). It will be recalled that the organisaiton of the current presidential election debates have become subjects of litigation in different courts of law in Nigeria.
Disputing the controversy debate on John Momoh’s exit from BON’s apex position, Administration and Finance Director of BON, Alhaji Usman Umar Bello, who also currently functions as acting executive secretary of the organization confirmed to MARKETING EDGE authoritatively that Mr. John Momoh’s stepping aside has nothing to do with any controversy whatsoever.
“There is nothing like the rumour that our former President, Mr. John Momoh bowed out because of any presidential debate controversy. Not at all, nothing like that, “he left because he has completed his two-year term tenure brilliantly and successfully 31st December, 2018” Bello said.
While not disputing that BON alongside NEDG have been battling with series of court cases resulting from protesting presidential aspirants of different political parties who felt aggrieved for not originally being listed by the NEDG, for the debate roaster Usman Umar Bello said the legal crisis resulting from the NEDG could not be adduced for BON’s statutory operational rules and standards of procedures.
The announcement of the exit of John Momoh, MARKETING EDGE gathered was made known to members of the public by his Vice President, Mr. Godfrey Ohuabunwa. Making the disclosure, Ohuanbuwa, who is currently Managing Director at Gospel Digital Technology said he has since assumed the duty of acting president of the organization.
Officially announcing the new position, Ohuabunwa said “I want to let you know that John Momoh has just left as the Chairman of BON and I am the newest chairman of BON”.
While in the saddle, the Channels TV boss who succeeded Alhaji Yakubu Ibn Mohammed, current Director General of Nigerian Ports Authority NPA, was said to have greatly impacted the broadcast umbrella group. It was during his tenure that the organization acquired his new office complex believed to be its own property.
The veteran broadcast journalist emerged as Chairman of BON after a keenly contested election to make a new record as the first private media mogul to chair BON. The media mogul polled 51 votes to defeat Alhaji Abass Dalhatu from Freedom Radio, in Kano who polled abysmal twelve votes.
He is widely recognized in Nigeria as a transformative industry pioneer with the 37-year-long career in news television broadcasting. As BON Chairman, John Momoh has been a vocal and tireless voice, calling for Nigeria to build formidable and independent broadcast industry.
He is also a campaigner for the country broadcast industry meeting the deadline for Digital Switch Over DSO, which will unleash the full potentials of journalists and give broadcast entrepreneurs unfettered vistas to fulfill their dreams.
He is a promoter of quality education for broadcast journalists and public communicators.
BON was established in 1973, and it today comprised of over 100 members and they collectively own over 250 radio and television stations.
