West Africa emerges most promising energy exploration hotspot – Survey

By Kingsley Odii

West Africa has emerged as a promising region for energy exploration with its vast reserves of oil and gas. The discovery of major offshore fields in countries like Nigeria and Angola have also garnered global attention. The region’s stable political landscape and favourable market conditions was found to have further added to its appeal.

According to the recent Energy Council Global Survey, 22% of respondents believe West Africa to hold the biggest exploration opportunities in the energy sector for the coming years, namely 2023 and beyond. The West Africa region is closely followed by South America, particularly Guyana, and the East Mediterranean. The survey suggested that there may be more attractive opportunities for energy exploration and investment outside the United Kingdom due to mounting uncertainty surrounding the country’s fiscal regime.

The survey further revealed that South America, particularly Guyana, has also gained recognition as a promising energy hotspot. The discovery of significant oil reserves in Guyana’s offshore fields has led to a surge in interest from international oil companies. The country’s potential for large-scale production coupled with its favourable investment climate has positioned it as an attractive destination for energy exploration and production activities.

The East Mediterranean region has also captured the attention of industry experts. With significant discoveries of natural gas reserves in countries like Egypt, Israel, and Cyprus, the region has become a focal point for energy exploration. The recent establishment of offshore fields and infrastructure projects has created a favourable environment for international investment. As a result, the East Mediterranean presents a lucrative opportunity for energy companies looking to expand their operations.

The survey’s findings raised questions about the attractiveness of the United Kingdom’s fiscal regime for the energy sector. Uncertainty surrounding the country’s taxation policies and regulatory environment has led some industry experts to look for opportunities abroad. International energy companies may seek more stable and investor-friendly jurisdictions to allocate their resources. This shift in focus towards regions with promising exploration opportunities and favourable investment conditions underscores the global nature of the energy industry.

While the Energy Council Global Survey highlighted the potential of West Africa, South America (particularly Guyana), and the East Mediterranean, it is essential to note that other regions also hold exploration opportunities. The survey’s results provided valuable insights into the preferences and opinions of industry experts but should be considered alongside other factors such as geopolitical risks, local infrastructure, and market dynamics when making investment decisions.

In conclusion, the survey suggested that West Africa, South America (especially Guyana), and the East Mediterranean are viewed as regions with significant exploration opportunities in the energy sector. With mounting uncertainty surrounding the UK’s fiscal regime, international investors may find these regions more attractive for investment. However, it is essential to conduct rigorous analysis and assessment of various factors before making investment decisions in any region.
