VON DG urges journalists to promote nationalism through PR

The Director-General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace, has advocated for journalists nationwide to adopt public relations practices to project the country positively and foster a sense of nationalism. The call was made during a courtesy visit by the Governing Council of the National Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), led by President Dr. Ike Neliaku, in Abuja.
Mallam Ndace emphasized the distinction between journalists and public relations experts, noting that while journalists focus on story headlines, PR professionals are concerned with the broader implications on the country’s image and society. He urged journalists to embrace public relations from the outset, seeing it as integral to their role rather than a late-career addition.
Expressing gratitude for the partnership requested by NIPR with VON, Ndace affirmed their collaboration, stating, “VON is for NIPR, and NIPR is for VON.” He outlined plans to expand broadcast languages to include those in Asia and highlighted the organization’s commitment to changing negative perceptions and narratives about Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of preventing the spread of fake news through their platform.
Mr. Neliaku, in his remarks, congratulated Ndace and sought partnership and support for NIPR programs to enhance nationalism and national orientation. The NIPR President outlined initiatives such as “Rebirth Nigeria,” the National Public Relations Retreat, caderlisation, and efforts to eliminate quacks in the industry. Plans for national spokesperson summits, awards, a ‘Reputation Summit,’ and the establishment of a Public Relations University were also discussed.
In conclusion, Ndace expressed his commitment to ensuring that everyone in VON, from top to bottom, becomes a member of NIPR. He stressed the need for NIPR’s intervention in areas of capacity building and mentoring, drawing from his own positive experiences with mentors in his career.
The visit showcased a shared vision between VON and NIPR in leveraging public relations for positive national impact and fostering a strong sense of pride and understanding of Nigeria’s narrative.
