Sony brings chat app to Playstation in new partnership with Discord
Sony, a multi-faceted electronic manufacturer, has announced partnership with Discord, an instant messaging and digital distribution platform that will integrate its popular gaming-focused chat app with Playstation’s own built-in social tools.
Sony’s investment which is part of a $100m Discord funding round makes the electronic giant a minority stake in the company.
The announcement revealed that the two companies have agreed to bring these new experiences closer together on console and mobile beginning from the year 2022 and this timeline proved that this is a major product change.
Sony president and chief executive Jim Ryan said: “We’re constantly looking for new ways to enable players around the world to connect with one another, form new friendships and communities, and share fun experiences and lasting memories.”
Discord used by more than 140 million gamers each month, mainly on PC and mobile devices anticipates that gamers will be able to use different consoles and devices to interact seamlessly.
Discord had rejected a $12bn (£8.7bn) offer from Microsoft to buy the company.
