OAAN condemns indecent adverts, cautions regulatory agencies

The Outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN) has risen in strong condemnation of illegal exposure of unwholesome advertisements across the Nigerian outdoor advertising landscape.

The Association has also reiterated its earlier advice to advertising regulatory agencies on the need to ensure that their dealings are restricted to professional members of OAAN for effective regulation of the industry.

President of the Association, Emmanuel Ajufo who expressed the group’s displeasure over the purported exposure of an indecent motorcade advertisement in the Lekki area of Lagos noted that the incidence was the handiwork of unregistered practitioners in the outdoor business.

He explained that the alleged company by the name Provision Media Limited was not a registered member of the advertising profession and does not belong to OAAN.

“We condemn it strongly. The company is not our member and indeed none of our members can behave in such unprofessional manner. We have our code of conduct that all our members subscribe to.

“We are using this opportunity to again reiterate our position that regulatory bodies should only deal with members of OAAN to forestall unprofessional conduct,” he said.

The OAAN boss added that regulatory agencies should jointly investigate the ugly incidence and make sure that a similar act was not allowed to happen again.

It would be recalled that a viral video of scantily clad ladies were displayed via motor truck advert medium in the Lekki area of Lagos purportedly advertising a yet to be identified product for the market.

The indecent advertisement had since drawn the irk of advertising regulatory agencies including Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) and the Lagos Advertising and Signage Agency (LASAA).

Both organisations have condemned in the strongest terms what they termed the illegal exposure of the indecent advertisement which they said was not in consonance with the code of advertising practice as well as not conforming to the culture and constitution of Nigeria.

They have both vowed to work together towards investigating the agencies behind the illegal adverts with a view to bringing them to book.
