Guardian Newspaper Editor Wins Big at Promasidor’s Quill Awards

Quill Awards, one of the most anticipated award ceremony in the media landscape in Nigeria came to thrilling close Friday night and it was Abiola Amzat, Features Editor of Guardian newspaper who stole the show as he picked up the ultimate prize for his story, ‘Home Away’. The award was the crowning moment for the young journalist who had earlier snapped up the Best Report on Children and Nutrition award.

Held at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Ikeja, Lagos, Mr. Amzat was awarded a plague, a high-end iPad, the company’s products and an all-expense paid four-week trip to the Thomson Foundation in London for a multi-media journalism training.

Other awardees at the event include, Olatunji Ololade of The Nation, who won the award for the Best CSR and Industry Reporter of the year, Tobi Aworinde of The Punch, the Education Reporter of the year and Nurain Kolawole Aliu of Leadership for Best Photo Story of the year. Tunde Ajaja of the Punch won the award for the Future Writer of the year, Daphne Uduneje of Nigerian Pilot, went home with the award for Brand Advocate of the year, while Kemi Busari of thevendornews.com was awarded Best Online Reporter of the year.

Managing Director, Promasidor Nigeria Limited Mr. Oliver Thiry, while commending all journalists who submitted entries for different categories of the awards, noted that if the intellectual exertion and the skill required in producing a good report or story is put in perspective, there is no reward that can adequately compensate the effort of journalists in educating the public.

“Based on this realisation of the important role of the media in our economy, the management of Promasidor Nigeria in 2012 conceptualized Promasidor Quill Awards, with the ultimate goal of assessing, recognizing and rewarding excellence for outstanding journalistic work.”

The Chairman of the Panel of Judges, Ambassador Patrick Dale Cole, also commended the awardees, saying the quality of entries for this year’s award was better than those received last year.
While reacting to his victory, Amzat commended Promasidor for their commitment to supporting the journalism career at a time when the economic downturn has forced many corporate organisations to shy away from such duties.

The Quill Awards, launched by Promasidor in 2012, is a platform to reward journalists annually for dedicated news reportage on industry, education, corporate social responsibility and nutrition issues.
