The conviction of controversial cross-dresser, Idris Okunneye, popularly known as Bobrisky on Friday has sparked a whirlwind of reactions on social media.

Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court, Lagos sentenced the social media influencer to a six-month jail term without an option of fine, following the  Naira abuse and money laundering charges filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC).

Bobrisky during the court proceedings was said to have identified himself as a male when asked by the judge if he was male or female.

Meanwhile,Netizens across social media have continued to express mixed reactions to the court verdict, as well as his response to the chief judge when asked about his gender.

It could be recalled that Bobrisky was arrested and detained by the EFCC in Lagos over abuse of Naira, by spraying and mutiling the currency, among others.

His arrest was confirmed by the anti-graft spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, saying he would be charged to court.

Before now, Nigerians have called on the police to arrest the award-winning cross-dresser for being transgender. The call was made after she controversially won the ‘best dressed female’ category at a Nollywood event.

Responding to the call while featuring on Channels TV interview, the Force Spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said police cannot arrest a cross-dresser based on physical appearance.

The PPRO added that cross-dressing is not yet a punishable offense in Nigeria.
