Cyber attacks, biggest headache in telecoms sector – NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has declared cyber attacks to be one of the biggest nightmares of the telecoms industry in the country. The Commission urged all consumers to stop opening emails that are not familiar to them, posting personal identification information or saving passwords online.

Prof Umar Danbatta, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, said Nigerians should take security measures to avoid being victims of criminal activity.  He urged the public to Note that the banks will never ask for personal details via the internet and also advised that in the event of unfortunate circumstances the consumers should contact their bankers immediately to freeze their accounts.

Danbatta added that the NCC as the regulator had devised ways for consumers to lodge their complaints when dissatisfied with the services provided by operators so that the Commission could apply appropriate regulatory measures and sanctions against the relevant service providers.

Felicia Onwuegbuchulam, the Director of the Consumer Affairs Bureau at NCC, said that the Commission strongly understands that the telecoms consumers were the paymasters of the industry and the target beneficiaries of all of the NCC’s activities. She added that because of this, they would enjoy the primary focus of NCC’s scheme of operations.
