CNN.com has ranked Lagos State in Nigeria as one of the best 20 destinations to be during the New Year’s Eve celebration on the planet earth.

The ranking, which was published on the first day of the New Year, had destinations like Dubai, Taipei Taiwan, Barcelona, Cape Town, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, New York City, Kiribati, America, Samoa, Rio de Janeiro, Reykjavik, Paris, Sydney, Lagos Nigeria, Istanbul, Edinburgh, London, Venice, Las Vegas, Koh Phangan, Thailand and Tokyo.

The published statement read: “From world-famous cities to lesser-known locations, these are the best places on the planet to welcome the New Year, offering everything from stunning fireworks displays and all-night parties to breath-taking views and traditional festivals.

“Lagos is the centrepiece of Nigeria’s New Year’s Eve celebrations, which are marked in culturally and religiously diverse ways. New Year’s Eve this year will see the city’s skies come alive with midnight fireworks shows and all-night partying at venues on the city’s Victoria Island.”

Recall that the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu had earlier, during the unveiling of his brand campaign with the theme: “A Greater Lagos Rising”, assured citizens of the state that his re-election in 2023 will increase the greatness of the state.

“We promised our people Greater Lagos. What do we see around us? We see abundant evidence of a new city rising from the womb of time. We do not make a false claim of having reached the zenith of our journey,” he said.

Lagos state has continued to be the most visited state and most talked about state in Nigeria. The megacity has the fourth-highest GDP in Africa and houses one of the largest and busiest seaports on the continent. The Lagos metropolitan area is a major educational and cultural centre in Sub-Saharan Africa. Due to the large urban population and port traffic volumes, Lagos is classified as a Medium-Port Megacity.
