CMOs of multinationals shun ADVAN exco leadership

It is a New Year, new dawn and a new transitional journey of leadership for the Advertisers Association of Nigeria (ADVAN), who elected new officials to pilot the affairs of the renowned sectoral group for the next two years renewable term in office.

This was at the association’s 19th Annual General Meeting at Marriot Hotel, Ikeja GRA Lagos, which witnessed the emergence of Osamede Uwubanmwen, General Manager, Biogenerics Nigeria Limited, as President, Nwando Ajene, Category and Marketing Manager Nestle, as 1st Vice President, Yosola Atere, Marketing Director, MasterCard as 2nd Vice President, while Obum Okoli and Kenneth Iruonagbe occupy the positions of Treasurer and Publicity Secretary respectively, including other members of the Ex-Officio.

Feelers emanating from some keen industry observers revealed that, some Chief Marketing Officers (CMOs) of multinational companies such as Nigerian Breweries, Guinness Nigerian PLC and Coca-Cola amongst several others have shunned the ADVAN exco leadership election. This is believed not to be unconnected with the busy schedules of the CMOs and the none competitive nature of the contest as industry watchers and observers had expected a full roll call of renowned CMOs handling leading brands in the country.

In the past, the leadership positions of the advertisers group had been keenly contested and won by chief marketing officers of multinationals. The gradual lack of interest and retreat from taking frontline positions in ADVAN Exco may not augur well for the group as critical regulatory issues may suffer considerably. The case in point is the current face-off between the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) and ADVAN over the recently unveiled Advertising Industry Standards of Practice (AISOP).

The advertisers group, which has come out vehemently to object the unveiling of AISOP, has been unable to proffer alternatives to the reform. Rather, ADVAN has since distanced itself from issues concerning AISOP, remaining aloof, while other groups have hailed and embraced the reform.
