Absence of data on the creative industry is a challenge – FG

The Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed it has no record of the exact number of players in the country’s creative industry to enable it formulate a clear policy for the sector.
Faiz Imam, Principal Adviser to the Minister of Art, Culture and Creative Economy, made this disclosure while featuring on Arise TV Morning Show Friday. He spoke on the newly unveiled roadmap to develop the creative industry.
Asked what the ministry is doing to harness the array of talents scattered across the country to boost the economy, Imam emphatically stated that currently, the government does not have the exact data on talents in the creative industry. This, he noted, has posed a serious challenge in harnessing the resources in the sector and translating it to economic prosperity.
According to him, there is a need for the ministry to have a proper data-base of artists, filmmakers, and other talents in the country. “But as at the moment, there is no such record and it is only the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics that can provide that.”
Imam further stated that the roadmap, which was unveiled on recently at the State House Banquet Hall, Abuja, is primarily aimed at driving Nigeria’s culture and showcasing its creators to the world, while establishing the country as the leading global hub for arts, culture and creativity.
While re-echoing the statement of Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, the PA highlighted the five key pillars upon which the vision of the ministry rests, including Policy, Legislative, Regulatory and Intellectual Property Reforms, Cultural Plan and Economic Plan, Private Sector Engagement and Destination 2030, Nigeria Everywhere.
He noted that the creative industry is the heartbeat of the new economy, serving as an engine of economic growth, a catalyst of change and a generator of employment opportunities. “Creatively talents are uniquely positioned in this great nation, endowed with an abundance of human capital and boundless possibilities.”
