Throwback Thursday: Snacks that evoke childhood memories

Childhood means creating a lot of memories, fun, games, school and many more things and there brands that evoke a rush of nostalgia among every age group. Several brands across categories creatively engage with their audience through innovative branding, positioning and campaigns.

According to a report, Statistics Market Research revenue in the confectionery segment amounts to $35.61bn in 2022. The market is expected to grow annually by 6.75% (CAGR 2022-2027). In global comparison, most revenue is generated in the United State ($186.50bn in 2022). The confectionery value is expected to amount to 3,502.4mkg by 2027. The confectionery segment is expected to show a volume growth of -3.7% in 2023.

Here are the biscuit brands that made consumers’ childhood memories and the companies that produce them:

Sumal Food Ltd: Is a name entirely synonymous with quality and is highly committed to maintaining its moral beliefs. The company is known for the high quality biscuits, chewing gum, and toffees it manufactures under the Sumal Foods group, but it also caters to a number of leading companies under their own names: Yale Foods and Vital Foods. Their products include Digestive, Malted Milk, Robot Gum, Drops, Cabin etc. Quality biscuits are made with wheat flour, sugar, vegetable fat to give a creamy and fine taste.

Niger Biscuit Co Ltd: Dates back to 1960 when the Company was incorporated in Nigeria for the manufacturing and sales of biscuits, chewing gum and other confectionery products. Oxford and Dandy Companies in Denmark were appointed as technical partners. Three biscuit production lines from Baker Perkins and two chewing gum lines from Teegarden were commissioned. In 1992 the overseas technical assistance with Oxford and Dandy Companies in Denmark were terminated and Niger Biscuit Company Limited became self-sufficient in all operational and technical areas of biscuits and confectionery manufacturing. The produced the famous brand of Oxford Cabin Biscuit with Nigeria map drawn on the pack.

Okin Biscuit: Okin biscuit factory was founded by Chief Adesoye, a legendary Nigerian Patriarch. Chief Adesoye also founded the popular Adesoye College in Kwara state. It appears though that the final chapter of the legendary biscuit maker is closed down. Okin had a good thing going with the rectangle-shaped shortcake cookies everyone knew and loved. Then they went ahead and made these round shaped biscuits.

Some years ago, the Okin Biscuits brand was the go-to brand. Back then, the two variants, shortcake and the round shaped Okin Biscuits, were every child’s delight.

Nasco Group: Makers of Nasco biscuit was established in Jos in 1963 by Nasreddin’s father, Ahmed Idris Nasreddin. The company grew from its small roots to become a major conglomerate with four major manufacturing units and other investments in the service sector. The company has a strong focus on agro-business and is involved in backward integration in this sector. NASCO was one of the first jute bag factories in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa. It said the industrialist Nasreddin established NASCO in response to the desire of the nation’s founding fathers to meet the challenges for the effective bagging, storage and export of the large agricultural products in the country.The story of NASCO is a story of innovation, diversification and growth.

Deli Food: Deli Foods Nigeria Ltd is one of the top three biscuit manufacturing companies in Nigeria. Their biscuit brands range from Coaster, Cabin, Cream Crackers, Shortbread, Short cakes, Wheat crackers, Chocolate and Cookies, and several other varieties.

Newbisco Ltd: Markers of Coaster biscuit was formerly called Nabisco Limited, the company is one of the major biscuits industry in Nigeria. This is the first company in the food industry.

Pepper snack biscuit, Coconut biscuit, Speedy Biscuit, Milk Maid, Chic Choc, Fishly snack, Baker’s, Paco Biscuit, Kent Biscuit, Fine tea, Digestive Coaster, Rich Tea, Nasco Biscuit etc.
