…calls for govt support
In a bid to reposition itself amongst other sports institutions globally, the National Institute for Sports has embarked on various rebranding efforts to make it one of the institutes of reckoning at the international level.
The Director/CEO, National Institute for Sports, Dr. Eke Kingdom, who disclosed some of the institute’s rebranding efforts, said this while reeling out plans for the NIS Silver Jubilee and Convocation ceremony.
The event is scheduled to hold on Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st of March, 2019 in Lagos. Some of the students that would take part in the convocation ceremony are; coaches, sports managers, sports administrators, elite athletes, amongst others.
According to Kingdom, since he assumed office as the Director of NIS, the institute has experienced a tremendous facelift in various aspects, adding that he has high hopes that the institute will be well recognized like the Australian Institute of Sports.
In his words: “Since I took over in 2015; we have experienced relative peace because I came when the whole atmosphere was tensed up. Apart from that, there has been regular promotion of staff as well as trainings to enable our staff deliver their best”
The NIS Director pointed out that henceforth the convocation ceremony of students would be done regularly; noting that the last convocation was held about twelve years ago.
He opined that when this is done, it would encourage new students to be sure that when they are through with their studies, they would do their convocation ceremony.
He added: “We are also rebranding and marketing NIS. We are going into our Silver Jubilee celebration and convocation which was last held about 12 years ago. We are doing this in partnership with Marcoms agency. We are rebranding the institute by doing these things that we have not been doing in the past”
“If we are able to do the convocation ceremony of this backlog of students from 2005 to 2018 and finish it; it is going to be an annual event, henceforth”
Kingdom, however, stressed that for NIS to be well recognized globally, the Federal Government has to come in by improving the institute’s budgetary allocation and its staff overhead.
He pointed out that with such increment; NIS would comfortably replace most of its dilapidated infrastructure as that would help its sports men and sports women do tremendously well.
“Our relationship with the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports is very cordial. The Honorable Minister, Solomon Dalung, and the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Adesola Olusola, have carried NIS along all these while. The only way that I would say that they should help us more is by improving our budgetary allocation and our overhead”
