Universal McCann wins MultiChoice media agency review, The Shop appointed for global account

MultiChioce, Africa’s leading Pay TV and content platform has picked Universal McCann as the new agency handler for its lucrative media account. This follows a long and intense pitch process which was held a few months ago, and the result recently announced.

Four leading agencies made the final shortlist. They are PHD Nigeria, Vizeum Nigeria, Universal McCann and AllSeason Media. The four agencies are said to have impressed the panelists with their understanding of the media industry in Africa. They equally demonstrated huge competences in data sciences and technology. However, Universal McCann towered above it peers in strategy and execution.

Universal McCann will now control MultiChoice’s media strategy and deployment across several markets in Africa. Until now, MultiChoice media deployment has been done on an adhoc basis, by an unsigned agency, but the outfit decided it was time to be more innovative and strategic in its media deployments practice in a way that aligns with its growth objectives and reflected the state of competition in the category.

The MultiChoice account win comes as a major relief for Universal McCann as the agency’s growth trajectory has failed to meet up with the best performers in its industry.

Universal McCann is a full service media organization. With a global operation of over 130 offices in over 100 countries, Universal McCann Nigeria is able to tap into international best practices, systems and tools to the advantage of our local clients.

MultiChoice is based in South Africa and provides multi-channel pay-TV and subscriber management services in 48 countries across sub-Sahara Africa and the adjacent Indian Ocean islands. MultiChoice Africa’s digital DStv service features over 200 video channels and up to 65 audio channels with a strong focus on local content.

Meanwhile, The Shop in South Africa also be in charge of MutiChoice’s media buying, planning and strategy, as well as other media-related services in the South Africa market.

“The Media Shop are so honoured to be awarded the MultiChoice account,” says Chris Botha, group MD of The Media Shop. “We are an agency that pride ourselves on our pioneering spirit of innovation, and look forward to walking this journey with another pioneering, innovative company like MultiChoice. The future of this category is so exciting and dynamic.”

“We’re building a new digital future for the MultiChoice Group, and need an agency who can bring a fresh and more edgy approach with a better overall return on our media spend,” adds Conrad Shezi, executive head of marketing at MultiChoice South Africa.

“The Media Shop are completely aligned to our new strategic vision, and we’re looking forward to working with them to bring that vision to life,” he adds, while also extending a word of thanks to their previous media agency, Mindshare, who, he says, have been excellent partners to them over the years. “They helped us to launch new packages and services like Showmax, grow our Compact and Access customer base and launch a number of products.”
