Samsung to exchange Galaxy Note 7 phones in Nigeria, says CPC

The Consumer Protection Council (CPC) has said that Samsung Electronics West Africa has indicated its readiness to provide voluntary exchange to Nigerian consumers who may have purchased its Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phones elsewhere in the world and brought it into the country.

Disclosing this newsmen, CPC, however, stressed that Samsung had fully complied with the ultimatum it was given on the recall of Galaxy Note 7 phones in Nigeria.

It will be recalled that CPC issued a seven-day ultimatum to Samsung Electronics West Africa Limited to provide information on the full status of its compliance with the global directive on the recall of Galaxy Note 7 over reports of explosion of many of the devices during charging.

According to CPC “Customers who already have Galaxy Note 7 device, Samsung will voluntarily exchange their current device with a new one over the coming weeks. Customers who have this device should submit it to Samsung authorized Service Centre in Nigeria and it would be replaced in the coming weeks.

“We are aware that some persons may have obtained it in one way or another. The company is currently conducting a thorough inspection with its suppliers to identify possible affected batteries in the market. We wish to advise that we have received instructions from Samsung Head Office in Seoul, South Korea, that a voluntary exchange of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 (device) would need to be conducted,” the organisation added.

CPC, however, said that although the incidents associated with the defective battery of the device were yet to be reported, adding that it was working with Samsung to ensure the exchange programme was convenient and efficient as possible.
