In line with its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and sustainability agenda, the NNPC Foundation, a subsidiary of NNPC Limited, has successfully commissioned and handed over three fully rehabilitated wards at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi.

The intervention, which covers Wards G, H and J, reflects the Foundation’s commitment to strengthening critical healthcare infrastructure and improving access to quality medical services. The upgraded wards now provide modern facilities with a combined capacity for 102 patients, creating a more conducive environment for both patients and healthcare workers.

Delivering the keynote address, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, emphasised that the company’s sustainability vision goes beyond energy production to include measurable social impact.

“True value is not measured only in the barrels of oil produced, but in lives impacted,” he said. “This is why we have institutionalised our Corporate Social Responsibility through the NNPC Foundation—not as an obligation, but as a strategic commitment to national development.”

He noted that the project aligns with NNPC Limited’s broader sustainability goals of delivering tangible, scalable and impactful interventions across Nigeria.

“Our credibility depends on delivering sustainable social investments that are seen and felt by Nigerians, such as the rehabilitated health facilities we are commissioning here today,” Ojulari added. “Access to quality healthcare is fundamental to human dignity and national progress.”

In her remarks, the Executive Vice President, Business Services, Mrs. Sophia Mbakwe, highlighted the project as a demonstration of responsible corporate citizenship and inclusive development.

“Today, NNPC Limited, through the NNPC Foundation, makes a strong statement—touching lives, restoring hope and renewing dignity,” she said. “This intervention strengthens a critical institution that serves millions of Nigerians in need of specialised care.”

She further noted that the Foundation’s programmes are aligned with global sustainability frameworks, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with focus areas spanning healthcare, education, environment, agriculture and youth empowerment.

“This rehabilitation project demonstrates what can be achieved when purpose meets action,” Mbakwe stated. “It reflects our commitment to ensuring that our interventions are not only impactful but sustainable.”

Providing further insight into the project, the Managing Director of the NNPC Foundation, Mrs. Emmanuella Arukwe, explained that the initiative was driven by a need-based and data-informed approach to social investment.

“This journey began over three years ago when the hospital management approached the Foundation for support,” she said. “We are proud to deliver facilities that will significantly enhance healthcare delivery and improve patient outcomes.”

Arukwe described the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi as a strategic healthcare institution with regional relevance, serving not only Nigeria but also neighbouring West African countries.

“This intervention is part of our broader commitment to breaking the cycle of inadequate health infrastructure, reducing preventable deaths, and ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare,” she said.

She also highlighted the Foundation’s wider impact in the health sector, including over 6,000 free cataract surgeries, cancer screenings for more than 4,000 Nigerians, and multiple medical outreach programmes targeting underserved communities.

The rehabilitation project, completed within 12 months, underscores the NNPC Foundation’s focus on sustainability, long-term value creation and stakeholder collaboration. As part of the handover, stakeholders were encouraged to ensure proper maintenance of the facilities to preserve the investment and guarantee lasting impact.

The commissioning ceremony brought together government representatives, healthcare professionals, community leaders and other key stakeholders, reinforcing a shared commitment to building resilient healthcare systems in Nigeria.

With this intervention, the NNPC Foundation continues to demonstrate how strategic CSR can drive inclusive growth, strengthen institutions and improve quality of life for Nigerians.
