NIPR partners Global Alliance, CIPR on industry standards
The Lagos State Chapter of the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has disclosed its plan to enter into a strategic working relationship with some foreign international public relations regulatory bodies with a view to leveraging global standards in public relations practice.
Already, the institute said it has established partnership arrangements with Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) in the UK and Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communications Management in Switzerland towards mutually beneficial relationships that would ultimately enhance the practice and reposition the institute.
Chairman of the Lagos State Chapter of the Institute, Olusegun McMedal, who disclosed this said the institute under his leadership was committed to repositioning and making the Lagos chapter enviable enough for other chapters to copy.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Marketing Edge, the Institute’s boss lamented what he called the serious dearth of data development on public relations, a trend he said had made it difficult to attain accurate measures of public relations spend in Nigeria.
The PR veteran who, although, objected to drawing comparison between PR trends in foreign climes as against the Nigerian experience, noted, however, that it was only proper that current trends in global practice be transferred and domesticated to fit in with the Nigerian Local environment.
He highlighted the various challenges bedeviling the institute to include among other things, monitoring and enforcing compliance to the code of practice, poor commitment of members to payment of subscriptions as well as low level of government’s appreciation of the roles and importance of public relations to society.
“It appears that we bark a lot and rarely bite. In my opinion, there are more non-members OF NIPR practicing than registered members; and not one single organisation has ever been picketed,” Mr. McMedal said.
