Marketing gave me the opportunity to satisfy my natural instinct, says former NIMN President

The former President, National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria, NIMN, Omoba Yemisi Shyllon, has revealed that he chose marketing as a profession because it gives him the opportunity to satisfy his natural instinct.

Omoba Shyllon stressed that he was still practicing marketing as a profession because he runs one of the most arts marketing organisations in Nigeria called Oyasaf.

Oyasaf is an art foundation that holds the largest private art collection in Nigeria which is widely acknowledged to house over 7000 artworks, made up of sculptures, paintings and other media, as well as over 55,000 photographic shots of Nigeria’s cultural festivals.

According to him, “Marketing gives me the opportunity to satisfy my natural instinct for adventure and travelling. I love travelling a lot; I love the adventure in marketing. I love the challenge in marketing; so I went into marketing.”

He pointed out that even though he had his background in engineering but immediately he finished his MBA degree, he was made the Market Research and Market Development Manager in United Africa Company, UAC Plc and then between two and a half years, he became the Marketing Manager of the company.

“I was blessed because my decision was proven right because it was rare at that time in the early 1980s to have engineering and MBA. It was very novel and the rest is history,” he stated.

Omoba Shyllon narrated that he rose speedily on his career path because his combination of results were rare as at the time he graduated from the university.

“I was made the Marketing Manager of UAC Plc and of course I used to run around writing visibility study, writing management stuffs to earn extra money apart from my salary and that helped and exposed me to the opportunity of becoming the Marketing Director of Nigerite Limited,” he added.

The former NIMN Boss noted that he does not have any regret choosing marketing as his choice of career in the early stage of his life.
