In the wake of recent leadership changes at the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), the outgone Executive Vice Chairman/ CEO of the commission, Barr. Babatunde Irukera, has expressed gratitude for his opportunity to serve Nigerian consumers and confidence in leaving behind a robust institutional advocate for fair markets.
In a recent social media post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Irukera acknowledged the recent presidential removal of himself and the Bureau of Public Enterprises CEO, but emphasized his confidence in the FCCPC’s future. He described the Commission as a “strong institutional advocate” and its staff as an “outstanding team of soldiers” dedicated to fair markets.
In his words, “Grateful for the opportunity to have served the incredibly vibrant & loyal Nigerian citizens/consumers. They deserve a better deal. I leave behind a strong Institutional advocate in the FCCPC, & an outstanding team of soldiers who work there daily for the cause of fair markets.”
During his tenure, Irukera garnered a reputation for taking bold steps and making far-reaching decisions. One notable achievement was his ability to hold powerful local and international companies accountable for infringing on consumer rights, a feat previously unmatched at the FCCPC.
At a strategic media engagement in Abuja in December, Irukera highlighted the Commission’s transformation under his leadership. He shared how the FCCPC evolved from being dependent on government subvention to becoming a self-funding agency. Notably, in the year 2023, the FCCPC generated over N56 billion, with 90 percent of the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) derived from penalties imposed on defaulting companies.
As Barr. Babatunde Irukera exits his role, the FCCPC stands as a testament to his commitment to fair markets and consumer protection, leaving behind a legacy of accomplishments and a dedicated team ready to continue the cause.
