Global media grows on innovation – Bankole

By Abimbola Mohammed

Following the role of blockchain in the media ecosystem, Rotimi Bankole, CEO, SBI Media, one of the leading media planning, buying and strategy agencies in Nigeria, said that blockchain has gained more interest in the global media ecosystem in the last few years.

According to Mr. Bankole, the intersection between media and the opportunities in blockchain cannot be overemphasised.

“The global media ecosystem has been a net beneficiary of innovation across digital media and in the last few years, blockchain has been a major segment that has gained more interest. The intersection between media and the opportunities in blockchain cannot be over-emphasised – from NFT tokens to e-commerce and customer engagement, blockchain brings more possibilities.”

Stating his views at the just concluded SBI Media workshop with the theme: “Media in a Blockchain Era”, and organized for Gen Z and Millennials, the agency boss said the initiative is designed to further the knowledge of blockchain in the Nigerian media industry.

“At SBI Media, we are always asking the big questions and pushing beyond the limit. That’s why we decided to shed more light on the blockchain industry because blockchain will change media content ownership, monetisation and management, and we want to be at the forefront of innovators within the ecosystem. We are more focused on what we can contribute and nurture within the ecosystem and we believe other agencies will see the need to research the ecosystem,” he said.

Speaking on the need for the annual workshop, the media expert noted that the initiative was borne out of the need to fulfill his vision of sharing wealth of information and experience, while contributing to the media space for the Nigerian youths. He added that the workshop is also a way to equip the next generation.

“It all started with a vision to fulfill a need in the media space by sharing the wealth of information and experience with this generation and the next, in order to position them in the entrepreneurship and employment market. We put together a team of professionals with vast experience across media, tech, supply chain, and judicial systems to mention a few, who with direction came up with a way to equip this generation for what lies ahead, hence the birth of SBI Media workshop.

“The youths of this era lack the fundamentals and requisite mentorship that shaped the media industry and as a give-back, we put together a workshop. The first edition had the theme: Monetizing the Media in Your Hands,” he said.

Speaking to the future of the workshop and the benefits lined up for all participants, he noted that many people have access to various channels in the media space and don’t know how to access the profitability in it with respect to generating revenue through media.

“Global scale revolution not just in the media space but across all sectors, this year we delved into blockchain technology where we dissected and demystified how blockchain and media are, and can be profitably intermarried. We look forward to training and empowering two million youths every year. We are also going to develop a full-fledged institution where we train youths academically and certify them to contribute to various sectors they will be involved in,” Mr. Bankole revealed.
