DG SON leads Nigerian delegation to 2022 ISO General Assembly in Abu Dhabi

Calls for the use of sustainable energy

The Director General of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Mallam Farouk Salim, recently led the Nigerian delegation to the 2022 International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) Annual General Assembly in Abu Dhabi the United Arab Emirate (UAE).

The annual meeting, which is the most important event in ISO’s calendar, brought together leaders in the standardization industry around the world to advance the quality infrastructure ecosystem.

The event themed “Collaborating for Good”, the Assembly took out time to discuss opportunities and challenges of ISO members in developing Countries and agreed on a roadmap on Innovation for transformative climate solutions as the world is bedeviled with dangerous effects of climate change.

In a paper titled “Leapfrogging to Cleaner Energy: An Opportunity for Africa”, SON made a strong point for cleaner and sustainable energy use for Africa by passing the traditional fuels and infrastructure by going through the Green Energy Transition (GET) for sustainable energy systems.

On the-side line of the General Assembly, Mallam Farouk and his entourage met with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) Incorporated an accredited Standards developer and the National Standards of Canada (NSC).

The meeting held fruitful deliberations centered on drawing clearer path for further collaboration, information sharing and development of Memorandum of Understanding towards forging a stronger tie between the Organization’s and SON.

In a resolution made at the end of the Assembly, members were encouraged to engage with their national delegates to COP27 with a view to raising awareness on the role of International Standards in transforming climate commitment into effective actions including actively promoting the International Workshop Agreement (IWA) 42 on Net Zero Guidelines currently under development.

The yearly forum draws together members from national standards bodies from more than 120 countries to achieve the shared vision for a better world represented by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s), which offers a blueprint for peace and prosperity, for people and planet.
