Access Bank-Lagos City Marathon boss denies scrapping registration fee for 2020 edition
As the year winds to an end, would-be participants of the Access Bank/Lagos City Marathon look forward to what the event has in stock for them in the 2020 edition.
However, contrary to reports in some quarters, the registration fee for 2020 has not been scrapped, said Yussuf Alli, General Manager of the sporting event.
“One of the primary requirements for us as a Silver Label Race is that participants must pay to be part of our race and we will be adhering fully to that,” said Alli.
He stated that N5, 000 registration fee for interested Nigerian runners and 100 USD for foreigners were still very much in place.
According to him, the introduction of the registration fee is in compliance with the World Athletics (formerly IAAF) and AIMS requirements for label marathons.
The General Manager also revealed that the Lagos State Government and some of the sponsors have bought registration forms in large quantities to be distributed to those they wish to give.
“It is quite interesting for us, for now, the Lagos State Government has bought 20, 000 forms, Access Bank 10, 000, Revolution Plus and 7Up have bought 5, 000 forms that they would all be distributing to their people of their choice. But for others, they would need to pay for the forms themselves,” Alli noted.
Aside the registration, Alli disclosed that several innovations had been put in place for the 2020 race, including the use of spy camera at every 5 km as well as the use of more transponders.
Among the benefits participant would get are huge bonuses for world-class performances.
The Access Bank/Lagos City Marathon is a Silver Label Marathon held annually in Lagos.
The origin of the event can be traced back to 1983 when the first ever Lagos International Marathon took place.
The marathon course, which spans a distance of about 42km, starts at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, (where previous half marathons initially finished), continues along the Third Mainland Bridge to the Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge and finishes at Eko Atlantic.
