Airtel Nigeria celebrates Ogunsanya’s impactful legacy

The leadership and friends of Airtel Nigeria recently gathered in Lagos to celebrate the remarkable tenure of Dr. Olusegun Ogunsanya, who retired from his role as Group Chief Executive Officer at the end of June.
The event which offered the company an opportunity to honour Ogunsanya’s transformative leadership and impactful legacy, was laced with heartfelt tributes to the visionary leader whose footprints have left an indelible mark on Airtel Nigeria and the broader African telecom landscape.
Some of his colleagues and attendees who shared personal anecdotes and memories, highlighted Ogunsanya’s approachable nature and his ability to connect with people at all levels. They explained that his leadership style fostered a culture of inclusivity and innovation, that propelled Airtel Africa to new heights.
It was a retirement celebration that spoke volume of his enduring impact and dedication of his career to driving progress and making a difference in the Telecom industry.
Ogunsanya joined the firm in 2012, ran the Nigerian operations of the telecommunications and mobile money company for nine years before he was appointed CEO of the Group in 2021.
With local knowledge of the African landscape and deep distribution experience, he led the company in maintaining double-digit revenue growth over many quarters and delivered new, innovative products to its customers across the continent.
His tenure at Airtel Africa has been distinguished by a commitment to innovation, growth, and community development.
From launching new products and services to expanding network infrastructure, Ogunsanya’s years in office were marked by a relentless pursuit of excellence.
His approach to leadership was characterized by empathy, integrity, and a focus on results which have inspired countless employees and stakeholders of the Telecom giant.
Under his leadership, Airtel Nigeria has not only expanded its reach and services but has also played a crucial role in enhancing connectivity across Africa. His strategic vision and unwavering commitment to worthy courses have positioned the company as a leading telecom provider on the continent.
Building on his outstanding legacies and given his deep experience across Africa, Ogunsanya was consequently appointed the pioneering chairman of Airtel Africa Charitable Foundation.
With this new role, he is expected to lead the Charitable Foundation in accelerating the Company’s commitment to its sustainability initiatives and charitable operations across its locations in Africa.
The Foundation’s objectives will focus on promoting digital inclusion, financial inclusion, access to education, and environmental protection. This will be a separate legal entity and be independent of the Airtel Africa Group.
Following his retirement from Airtel Africa plc, Mr. Ogunsanya will also be available to advise the Chairman, the Airtel Africa Board and Chief Executive Officer for a 12-month period.
As Airtel Nigeria continues to build on the strong foundation laid during his tenure, the impact of Ogunsanya’s leadership will be felt for years to come.
