70% broadband target gets boost, operator rolls out 10, 000km fibre optic cables

In a significant development for Nigeria’s National Broadband Plan, Global Independent Connect Limited (GICL), a subsidiary of IHS Holding Limited, has successfully implemented a sprawling 10,000km fiber optic cable network across the country. This deployment is poised to provide a substantial push toward achieving the National Broadband Plan’s target of 70% broadband penetration by 2025.
IHS Nigeria, the parent company, has strategically employed fiber-to-the-tower (FTTT) technology as part of its broader initiative. This move is aimed at augmenting transmission capacity, improving the performance of existing fiber access networks, and laying the groundwork for the integration of cutting-edge technologies, including 5G services.
The fiber optic network orchestrated by GICL, under the umbrella of IHS Nigeria, is designed to interconnect towers and extend fiber infrastructure to key metropolitan areas. This strategic maneuver is expected to facilitate the seamless delivery of digital services to residences, businesses, and public institutions, marking a significant collaboration with various partners.
Kazeem Oladepo, Vice President of GICL, underscored the importance of overcoming limitations in existing fiber optic networks to enhance communication services. He emphasized that this initiative is geared towards introducing emerging technologies and driving the adoption of digital services in Nigeria. The deployment strategy revolves around the principles of open access and shared infrastructure, providing robust and scalable fiber pairs, along with alternate ducts, to accommodate multiple operators effectively.
In addition to GICL’s ambitious fiber optic endeavor, IHS Nigeria has successfully extended mobile network coverage to over 580 rural communities that were previously underserved. This initiative, constituting part of the rural telephony program, seeks to bring voice and data services to these communities. The objective aligns with the rollout targets of mobile network operators and supports the Federal Government’s overarching agenda for digital inclusion.
The Vice President of GICL, Kazeem Oladepo, highlighted the commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s digital economy objectives. He emphasized the collaborative efforts with stakeholders, including customers, state, and federal agencies, which have resulted in the rapid and substantial deployment of the fiber optic cable network in less than three years. This achievement serves as a testament to the potential for accelerated critical infrastructure rollout when key stakeholders align their objectives.
The extensive deployment of the fiber optic infrastructure by GICL stands as a pivotal stride toward achieving enhanced broadband connectivity and digital services across Nigeria, contributing significantly to the realization of the National Broadband Plan’s ambitious goals.
