Social media platform X has launched text overlay capability for video; giving users the ability to embed text and emojis directly into video clips on iOS.

The announcement was made by X’s creator products engineer Allegra Jacchia, who posted a short demonstration video overload with the text “an Italian summer.”

The feature is straightforward in its function. However, the timing and context tell a more revealing story about where X currently stands in the social media landscape.

Recall that Snapchat introduced text overlays for video in 2012. Instagram added the capability to its Stories format in 2016. TikTok brought the option to its user base in 2019. X is introducing it in 2026, arriving between seven and fourteen years after its major competitors made the same move.

The addition aligns with X’s broader video-first pivot, which began under former CEO Linda Yaccarino’s 2024 strategy. Furthermore, the company has recently announced a livestream studio launch, payout incentives for live video creators, and a dedicated video editor hub for iOS users. Nikita Bier, X’s former head of product, noted before his departure that video posts now account for close to half of all impressions on the platform; a statistic that has driven the company to adjust its recommendation algorithm to accommodate the shift.

Consequently, what is emerging is a picture of X in transition, a platform that built its identity and its entire user base on text, now racing to retrofit itself as a video-first destination in a market where TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts have set the creative standard for years.

Text overlays are a small feature. Nevertheless, they are a visible marker of how much ground X has to cover and how long it waited to start covering it.
