Sony PS5 supply cut to last until 2022
Sony Group, an electronic giant, has announced that its supply cut of PlayStation 5 will extend into year 2022, implying that the company will not be able to boost sales target for its latest games console. Sony told analysts that shortages in components like semiconductors are partly the reason for the inability to keep up with the strong demand for PS5.
Commenting on this, Chief Financial Officer of the Sony Group, Hiroki Totoki, said: “I don’t think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year, our supply wouldn’t be able to catch up with demand.”
Totoki said further that Sony needs to increase production as soon as possible and make sure there are consoles on store shelves noting that demand will remain high regardless of the Covid-19 situation, assuring of Sony’s ability to fully optimise the stay-at-home entertainment surge occasioned by lockdowns and emergency orders.
Sony’s CFO expressed optimism that the company which had sold nearly 8 million PS5 consoles since the launch in late 2020, will sell nearly 15 million by April 2022.
Meanwhile, during its financial report, results in late April, the Japanese conglomerate disclosed that it sold 7.8 million units of the console through to 31 March, with expected sale to reach at least 14.8 million units in the current fiscal year to keep up the pace to match the sale of PlayStation 4, which has sold in excess of 115.9 million units to date.
