We've spent over N6 billion on scholarships in 10 years, Chevron reveals
Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) has revealed that it has spent over N6 billion on scholarships in 10 years, with over 15,000 students benefiting from the educational support programmes.
The General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs, PGPA Chevron Nigeria Limited, Mr. Deji Haastrup revealed this on Thursday in Asaba, the Delta State capital during the 11th edition of National Art Competition/Art Exhibition and Prize giving ceremony organized by NNPC/Chevron Joint venture.
Speaking at the occasion, Haastrup, said the beneficiaries included those in Agbami Medical and Engineering Scholarship Scheme which is funded by Star Deep Water Petroleum Limited, a company owned by CNL and other Co-Ventures in the Agbami Field.
He noted that Chevron’s support towards educational development has resulted in 64 percent increase in WAEC enrolment, adding that the average performance from students supported by the company has improved from 18 percent in 2013 to 44 percent in 2014.
He pointed out that every year, the number of entrants into the Art competition keeps increasing due to the general acceptance by Nigerians.
Haastrup also stated that Chevron donated 27 laboratories as well as 13 Hybrid Libraries to different schools across Nigeria, revealing that Delta State was the first to receive a fully equipped modern science laboratory from the company.
Delta State Deputy Governor, Barr. Kingsley Otuaro in a remark declared that Chevron’s educational policy is in line with Delta State Government SMART agenda and lauded the company for championing education and other development programmes for the welfare of their host communities.
The 2016 edition of the competition themed ‘Waste to Wealth’ was part of Chevron’s positive thinking towards the enhancement of Nigeria’s economy and 20 winners from different schools across Nigeria were presented with prizes.
The Senior Secondary School category winner was Azike Chioma Anita, while the winner of the Junior Secondary School category was Atakere Oritsemeyiwa Edith.
