Nigerian Breweries, others issued power generation permits by NERC

The Nigerian Breweries has been issued captive power generation permit by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
Other applicants who were issued permits include some universities and the NDA, a military institution located in Kaduna State.
The Nigerian Breweries was permitted to generate up to 41MW of captive power for its facilities in Abia, Oyo, and Enugu States by the NERC.
Captive power generation is when a company produces electricity for its own use without selling to any third party.
According to NERC in its quarterly report, the permits were granted in the third quarter of 2024, with total of 63.36 megawatts (MW).
“Captive power generation permits are issued to entities that intend to own and maintain power plants exclusively for their own consumption i.e. no sale of electricity generated from the plant to any third party,” the NERC said.
“The Commission approved the grant of captive power generation permits to eleven (11) applicants (gross capacity of 63.36MW).”
According to the commission, the University of Abuja received approval to generate 3MW of electricity, while the University of Calabar and its Teaching Hospital in Cross River State secured a permit for 7MW.
Michael Okpara University of Agriculture in Abia State was allowed to generate 3MW while the University of Maiduguri along with its Teaching Hospital in Borno would generate 12MW.
More so, the Federal University of Agriculture in Abeokuta, Ogun State, was permitted to generate 3MW, while the Federal University Gashua in Yobe got approval for 1.50MW.
The NDA also obtained the NERC approval to generate 2.50MW of electricity.
