MTN holds 5G Demo in Lagos, honours dignitaries

To demonstrate proof of concept and give consumers, including dignitaries, a hands-on experience of 5G technology, MTN Nigeria has played host to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Sherifat Folashade Jaji, at its 5G technology showcase event.

Other notable attendees at the Lagos 5G showcase included dignitaries such as the Oba of Lagos, His Royal Majesty, Oba Rilwan Akiolu; Hon. Tunde Braimoh, member, Lagos state house of assembly and the representative of the Speaker, and a host of others.

The occasion was the third of seven demonstrations scheduled to hold in major cities across the Nigeria, followed the successful trial in Abuja on November 25 and Calabar on November 28, 2019, respectively.

The demo events are the result of a strong collaboration between the Ministry of Communications Technology and Digital Economy and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), that saw MTN working with its partners, namely, Huawei (Abuja), ZTE (Calabar) and Ericsson (Lagos), to provide a glimpse into a range of 5G use cases and applications at test Labs designed to show proof-of-concept in these locations.

Emphasising the importance of partnerships at the 5G Demo, Ferdi Moolman, the Chief Executive Officer, MTN Nigeria, said: “Pushing boundaries is easier when your aspirations are supported by likeminded people. We are here today because of the support and guidance of the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy and the Nigerian Communications Commission who provided the trial spectrum used for this.”

He added: “Also key to this achievement are our equipment vendors who shared our vision, and whose capabilities were brought to bear in making the 5G trials across the country a reality.  We are grateful for these partners, our customers and everyone who made it possible. Today’s success underlines the fact that we are good together.”

Also speaking at the event, Mazen Mroue, Chief Operating Officer, MTN Nigeria noted: “In collaboration with our technical partners and the support of the Federal Government, we are proudly putting Nigeria on the 5G technology map.  As we continue to invest in technology solutions to meet the wide needs of our customers, MTN will continue to strengthen these partnerships as we move to build our 5G capacity in future, guided by the standards and spectrum set by the Nigerian Communications Commission.”
