LASAA has achieved 55% cleanup in Lagos – Commissioner

The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment, Dr. Samuel Babatunde Adejare on Thursday said that the Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA) has achieved 55 percent cleanup on major and minor roads around the Lagos metropolis. This is one of the ways the agency has set out to regulate and control outdoor advertising and signage displays in Lagos State.

Speaking at the Ministerial Press Briefing of the State Government held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja, in commemoration of the first year in office of the Lagos State governor; Dr. Adejare said: “We achieved 55 percent cleanup on major and minor roads weekly. This is due to the recalcitrant attitude of persons who paste posters. As soon as posters are removed from a spot and the cleaning team leaves the spot, another set of posters are deployed on the cleaned surface by faceless individuals”.

He also said that the introduction of the LASAA Sanitation Day exercise in November 2015 has helped develop zero tolerance for indiscriminate pasting of posters around the state.

Adejare however emphasized that the agency had deployed warning signs at strategic locations in the State, apprehended persons deploying posters and referred them to the State task force.

Other benefits of the LASAA Sanitation Day exercise include helping in the identification of poster/banner black spots and reduction of blinding brightness from LED illuminated structures through regular night monitoring with specialized equipment.

The Commissioner also revealed that the agency had ensured sustained enforcement on 1st, 2nd and 3rd Party client/structure to ensure full compliance with the LASAA’s Laws. In this regard, LASAA had increased maintenance check on outdoor structures from four times in a year to six times a year; as well as ensuring safety of life and property within the environment where structures are erected.

Adejare also disclosed that in view of the mandate of the ministry to initiate, formulate, regulate, set standard, evaluate and execute policies relating to environmental matters in the state, it has judiciously pursued this goal with unwavering zeal in the last one year of the present administration.
