The Lagos State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has joined the global communications community in commemorating World PR Day 2025.

It will be celebrated under the theme: “Building Bridges and Navigating Polarisation.”

Addressing global division
With this, the  theme reflects growing concerns about increasing division across political, social, and cultural lines worldwide.

Besides this, there is  urgent need for communication professionals to play a more strategic role in fostering unity, mutual understanding, and constructive dialogue.

Role of PR in society
While reflecting on the relevance of this year’s theme, Dr. Samuel Ayetutu, fnipr, Chairman of Lagos NIPR, emphasized the foundational role of public relations in society.

“Public relations is more than media relations or publicity. At its core, PR is about building and managing relationships. In a world threatened by polarisation, disinformation, and mistrust, PR professionals are uniquely positioned to rebuild broken bridges, facilitate dialogue, and promote social cohesion,” he said.

Promoting truth and empathy
Dr. Ayetutu also stressed that PR grounded in truth, empathy, and active engagement can help de-escalate social tensions, correct misinformation, and foster inclusion in governance and public life.

Call to government
Meanwhile, as part of the observance, the Chapter called on government at all levels to take strategic communication more seriously by integrating professional PR advisory into decision-making, particularly in areas like conflict resolution, community engagement, and stakeholder management.

“The failure to proactively communicate is often the seed of conflict. Government and institutions must understand that PR is not optional it is essential to peace-building and national unity,” he added.

Commitment to ethical practice
Furthermore, in marking the day, Lagos NIPR reaffirmed its commitment to upholding ethical standards, strengthening the capacity of practitioners, and creating platforms for knowledge-sharing and collaboration across the industry.

Finally, World PR Day, observed annually on July 16, is a global event that celebrates the power and purpose of public relations in shaping narratives, building trust, and uniting communities.
