The Honourable Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, expressed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting the advancement of the advertising industry in Nigeria during the inauguration of the Advertising Offences Tribunal in Abuja last Thursday.

In his address, the Minister emphasized the importance of conducting advertising, advertisement, and marketing communications with a level of decency and respect for cultural values and constitutional tenets. Nigeria, as a nation with remarkable characteristics and a diverse ethnic, cultural, and religious background, aims to ensure that advertising practices align with these values.

The establishment of the Advertising Offences Tribunal marks a significant step in regulating and enforcing ethical advertising practices in the country. This specialized tribunal will serve as a platform for resolving disputes and addressing offenses related to advertising, promoting fairness and accountability within the industry.

Lai Mohammed also highlighted that the Federal Government recognizes the critical role the advertising sector plays in driving economic growth, creating job opportunities, and promoting entrepreneurship. By supporting the industry’s advancement, the government aims to harness its potential to contribute to the nation’s development and showcase Nigeria’s cultural diversity.

The Advertising Offences Tribunal will work closely with relevant stakeholders, including advertising agencies, marketers, and regulatory bodies, to ensure compliance with advertising standards and guidelines. It will address issues such as misleading advertisements, false claims, unethical practices, and violations of cultural sensitivities.

The Minister also emphasized the need for self-regulation within the advertising industry. He called on advertising professionals and organizations to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, ethics, and social responsibility. He also encouraged the industry to adopt proactive measures to prevent offenses and maintain public trust in advertising.
