Econet Global kicks off USD100m data centre construction in Nigeria
Strive Masiyiwa, founder and executive chairman of Econet Global Limited, has disclosed that his Africa Data Centres (ADC) have commenced construction of Nigeria’s biggest Data Centre that will provide cheap cloud services.
Announcing via his Facebook page recently, the UK trained engineer, noted that the construction of the US$100m worth facility has commenced
“This week marked the start of the construction of our first major Data Centre facility in Lagos, Nigeria. Named the ADC Atlantic, this is a US$100m investment in the Nigerian economy.
“In the Data Centre world, this will be the largest facility outside South Africa,” Masiyiwa said.
Considering the power consuming nature of such facilities, provisions of have been made to supply power.
“ADC works with its sister company DPA which provides the power system using solar energy and natural gas,” he disclosed.
The facility will not only provide cheap cloud services, it will also help create hi-tech jobs and help to fast-track the processing of high volume data
With US$300m investment from United States government’s International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), ADC is empowered to spread its tentacles to Egypt, Ghana, and Morocco and expand the existing ones in South Africa and Kenya.
