Chain stores battle for consumers

The two chain stores are Shoprite and Spar. The competition between both chain stores has grown in recent times as both brands looks to gain increased market share.

Shoprite Nigeria is currently running a new promo and giving away N1 million worth of prizes daily to shoppers to celebrate its 13 years anniversary in the country.

The promo which is expected to end on September 27 will see consumers win N5, 000, N50, 000 or N250, 000 respectively.

In August, Spar Nigeria unveiled ‘Scratch and Get Free Gifts’ promo to woo customers. The month long promo which coincides with Spar’s 30th anniversary, rewarded shoppers who spent N5, 000 and above with over 750 gifts items in addition to a grand prize of a brand new Nissan Almera Saloon car.

While commenting on the new promo, the General Manager Shoprite Nigeria, Carl Erickson, said that to become a winner, participants are expected to buy three or more of the participating products.

Erickson noted that such products include: Aquafina, Bounty, Pepsi, Mars, Milo, Molfix, Ocean Beach, CloseUp, Heineken, Nescafe, Sunlight, President Margarine, Nestle Golden Morn, Cooks, Hollandia Yoghurt, Golden Phoenix, Dettol, Amstel Malta, Five Alive, and Jameson Irish Whiskey.

“With this promotion, we want to reward our customers for their loyalty. It’s not only a celebration of Shoprite Nigeria’s birthday, but also the people –workers and customers- without whom our business would not exist” he said.

The Shoprite General Manager claimed that consumers can enter for the jackpot as many times as possible provided that a minimum of three participating products are bought every time.
