Brazil Seeks Nigeria’s collaboration on Agricultural development
A business delegation from Brazil is seeking the partnership of stakeholders in the agricultural sector in the country in the area of machinery and technical support.
The delegation which comprises ABIMAQ (Brazilian Association for Industrial Machines and Equipment Manufacturers), BNDES (Brazilian National Development Bank), and APEX-BRASIL (Brazilian Trade & Investment Promotion Agency) at a Business Forum held at Oriental Hotel, Lagos recently explained that the collaboration would help boost the country’s agricultural sector and the backward integration drive of most Nigerian companies.
Amb. Maria A. Figueiredo, Brazilian Consul-General in Lagos said Brazil agricultural industry has grown significantly and now it is expanding its frontiers into other markets like Nigeria through the exportation of agricultural equipments, goods and services.
She added that the two countries had a long history of bi-lateral trade and the collaboration would help to boost Nigeria’s economy, judging from the huge investment the agricultural sector is receiving from both the government and the private sector.
“I know Nigeria has a lot of financing for agriculture; there is a lot of money there which could be used for importation of Brazilian goods, services and technology. So that is why I insisted on their coming, so that they will know what Nigeria has to offer, not only as a potential importer but also what they could finance on their own”, she explained.
Similarly, the President, Nigerian-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NBCCI), Mr. Emmanuel Ibru explained that the collaboration would help the two countries grow its agricultural industry.
“What happened in Brazil 20 years ago has led to its becoming at one point in time, an industrial and agricultural power house. Definitively, we feel that Nigeria is at the stage where we can really borrow a lot from the Brazilian experience and here we have about 180 million people and they all have to eat.
“Agric business seems to be the main focus right now for Nigerian economy and we really think there can be major transfer of goods and services between Brazil and Nigeria. Nigerian-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce and Industry is at the forefront of trying to push for that development”, he stated.
Anderson Jorge, representative of Apexbrasil; Casemiro Bruno, representative of ABIMAQ and other delegates at the meeting stated that industry players across the value chain in the agriculture sector in Brazil are ready to partner with Nigerian companies to see that the government plans on agricultural revolution and non-oil initiatives become a success. The company also exited recession in 2017 and it records a growing Gross Domestic Product (GDP) forecast to grow 2.1% in 2018.
Meanwhile, the NBCCI is set up with the objective to encourage and promote Nigeria-Brazil’s private and public sectors bilateral business relationships, by providing a network of national and international business contacts and opportunities; to promote and develop all matters affecting those involved in the ventures; to encourage an orderly development and expansion of all segments of the business relationship between both countries.
