Airlines generate over N330bn from Ticket Sales in 10months
Over N330billion was generated from ticket sales in Nigeria by local and foreign airlines between January and October 2016 from more than 11.3million passengers.
This was disclosed by the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Captain Muhtar Usman, who also said that the industry recorded N385,909,897,028,80 in ticket sales between January and December 2015.
Speaking at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) Annex, Murtala Muhammed International Airport, (MMIA) Lagos, Usman stated that there was a slight declined in ticket sales in 2016 when compared to the previous year.
He noted that apart from the ticket sales, both foreign and domestic airlines operated a total of 597 flights with 42,000 passengers daily in 2016 while a total of 700 flights were operated with 42,000 passengers daily in 2015 respectively.
The Director-General described 2016 as a successful year with a mixed bag of fortunes for the industry.
He said the industry was faced with challenges, including the current economic recession, paucity of foreign exchange, inability of foreign carriers to repatriate funds and scarcity of aviation fuel.
Usman said, however, that the NCAA was able to record some achievements, including the ongoing certification of the Abuja and Lagos airports.
He named other achievements as the certification of air navigation service providers as well as excelling in various international audits.
The NCAA chief expressed satisfaction with the zero accident recorded for the third consecutive year in the industry, adding that it was one of the safest in Nigeria’s history.
He also unveiled a four-point agenda for the NCAA this year, aimed at improving safety and security of the Nigerian airspace through effective regulations.
According to him, the agenda include sustaining zero accident in aviation, reviewing and strengthening economic regulation, improved consumer protection and continuous prioritization of training.
