Why Nigeria PR has not featured in Holmes Report- PRCAN boss
President of the Public Relations Consultants Association of Nigeria (PRCAN), Mr. John Ehiguese, has disclosed that the absence of data to track the growth of Public relations industry is one of the reasons why the country has not been ranked among the world’s top 250 PR firms.
According to him, the quantum of Public Relations businesses in the country can’t be easily measured annually. Most agencies don’t disclose their fee, income from clients and the cost of public relations campaigns.
However, agencies with head quarter in South Africa, USA, France, China, Germany, Japan, Canada, UK, Brazil, Spain, Italy, Russia, amongst others appeared in 2016 Holmes report without any other African country aside South Africa making the list.
The Holmes Report is a global ranking Public Relations agencies and industry’s leading source of news, trends, events, and career information for PR professionals that is based in New York, U.S.A.
Speaking during the just concluded 2017 Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Ikeja where new executive members of PRCAN were sworn-in, re-elected Ehiguese stressed that the absence of data pose a great challenge to practitioners and the industry at large.
He pointed that the country’s practitioners need to embark on research, in-depth documentation of industry’s research and ethical conduct at all time.
“Public relations practice in many of these countries is not necessarily better than what is obtained in Nigeria. The only edge they have over us is that their systems are more organised in terms of infrastructural support, research, documentation and higher ethical threshold,” he said.
Speaking in the same vein, Managing Director, CMC Connect Burson-Marsteller, Mr. Yomi Badejo-Okunsayo, said that dearth of data is not only affecting PR industry but other IMC players.
He said: “The key thing is the age of the market, our market is yet to mature whether it is advertising, whether it is PR, whether it is experiential, we are yet to mature, when we mature, you will find out that you can’t hide those things as figures anymore and if you look at the environment in itself; we are only getting to point where we make things transparent.”
Meanwhile, the Executive members who got re-elected along-side with the President, John Ehiguese, representing Mediacraft Associates; Vice President, Muyiwa Akintunde of Leap Communications; and Secretary General, Adetola Odusote from CMC Connect Burson-Marsteller. Others re-elected into the leadership of the association include: Publicity Secretary, Israel Opayemi, representing Chain Reactions Nigeria and Treasurer, Mojisola Saka, representing SoulComm. Meanwhile, Tampiri Irimagha-Akemu of Sesema PR was elected for the first time as Assistant Secretary General of the association.
