Tony Elumelu Commends Philips Oduoza for sustaining UBA’s growth

Chairman of UBA Plc Mr. Tony Elumelu has commended the now retired GMD/CEO of the bank, Philips Oduoza, for sustaining the momentum of growth within his six year reign at the leading financial institution.

Elumelu who was a former GMD/CEO of the pan African bank, spoke at an event organized to celebrate the astute banker, Oduoza, who has been the GMD/CEO, UBA since August 2010, and officially retired from the bank on 31 July. Uduoza has now handed the baton of leadership over to Kennedy Uzoka, who has been the Deputy Managing Director in the last six years.

The ceremony which was held on Wednesday, and accompanied by a book launch, was witnessed by dignitaries and captains of industries including Mr. Alex Otti, former CEO of Diamond bank and Chairman of Best Foods Limited, Mr. Emmanuel Ijewere, who was Chairman of the event.

According to a statement by the bank’s Head, Media Relations, Abiodun Coker, the book titled, ‘Dynamics of the Nigerian financial system,’ a compilation of essays edited by Professor Michael Ogbeide, was launched to coincide with Oduoza’s retirement.

While eulogizing the former UBA GMD/CEO, Ijewere described him as deserving of celebration because “he has proven himself to be a worthy banker, an authority in the banking industry, and an administrator who has traversed the banking and financial landscape without blemish”.

The editor of the book, Professor Mike Ogbeide of the University of Lagos, added that the book was a worthy testimony of Oduoza’s contributions to an industry “whose zenith he reached by scoring many firsts.”
