Throwback Thursday: Vintage lamps
By Abimbola Mohammed
Invented at least as early as 70,000 Before the Common Era (BCE), oil lamps, lighting fuels, gas lights, electric arc lamps, electric incandescent lamps, light bulbs, street lamps, vapour lamps, neon signs, fluorescent lamps, halogen lights, etc, the historical progress of lighting, especially mobile handheld lamps, has been a big step forward.
As a result of constant power outages in Nigeria, a few households still rely on various types of lamps to illuminate their environment at night.
Here is MARKETING EDGE’s Throwback Thursday featuring some of the oil and electric rechargeable lamps that were used in the past to generate light in Nigerian households.
Kerosene lantern
Kerosene lanterns existed long before rechargeable lamps and cell phones with inbuilt torchlight features became the norm. Using oil/kerosene lanterns, however, came with some attendant risks, which included breaking the globe while cleaning it or even having the kerosene spill on the food.
Kerosene lanterns are not easy to maintain as the struggle to refill them and the frustrating task of changing or adjusting the wick can be cumbersome.
Though still in use in remote villages, rechargeable lights have replaced the vintage kerosene lamps
The big rechargeable lamps (Baba Nla lamp)
Binatone lamp, referred to as Baba Nla lamp in some parts of the country, was once the most famous. Almost everyone had the Binatone brand as it came with an in-built radio.
Flashlight with signal button
Flashlights with signal buttons, 2 D cells battery, could be found in almost every home in the 80s and 90s. Also you can use 18650 type batteries and bulbs that match the battery volts. Each flashlight is 12.5cm long. The most popular was the Chinese Tiger Head iron flashlights.
